Major Change: EU €150 Duty Exemption Ending July 2026
The European Union is abolishing the €150 customs duty exemption starting 1 July 2026. A €3 flat customs duty per item will apply to all imports under €150. The Netherlands is also introducing its own national handling fee of €2 per declaration line (per product type). By mid-2028, standard EU tariff rates will apply. 21% BTW already applies to all imports — this hasn't changed. ForwardMe's consolidation feature helps offset additional costs by reducing shipping fees.
BTW Collection on Forwarded Packages
The Netherlands charges 21% BTW on all imported goods from the first euro — there is no tax-free threshold. When using a package forwarder like Forwardme, the carrier (DHL, FedEx, UPS, or PostNL) collects BTW and any applicable duty upon delivery. You may see this as "invoerrechten en btw" on your carrier's customs notification. PostNL typically charges a handling fee of €10–€17 for customs processing. DHL/FedEx/UPS include processing in express shipping.
Dutch National Handling Fee (€2)
In addition to the EU-wide €3 duty per item (from July 2026), the Netherlands is introducing its own national customs handling fee of €2 per declaration line (per product type based on HS code). Products with the same HS code count as one product type. This fee compensates Dutch customs for processing the increasing volume of international parcels.
