Italy's 22% IVA — Plan Your Budget
Italy charges 22% IVA on all imported goods from the first euro — there is no tax-free threshold. This is the highest standard VAT rate among the major EU economies: Italy 22%, Netherlands 21%, France 20%, Germany 19%. Despite the higher VAT, US products are often still significantly cheaper than Italian retail prices. For example, Nike sneakers in the US cost $120 + 22% IVA = ~€135 total, vs. €160+ at Italian retail.
Major Change: EU €150 Duty Exemption Ending July 2026
Starting 1 July 2026, a €3 flat customs duty per item will apply to all imports under €150, ending the long-standing duty exemption. Italy is among the EU countries considering an early national handling fee. 22% IVA already applies to all imports — this hasn't changed.
IVA Collection on Forwarded Packages
When using ForwardMe, the carrier (DHL, FedEx, UPS, or Poste Italiane) collects IVA and any applicable customs duty upon delivery. You'll see this as "oneri doganali" or "diritti e tasse di importazione" on the carrier notification. Poste Italiane typically charges a processing fee of ~€5–€12 for customs clearance. Express carriers usually include processing in the shipping price.
Italy National Handling Fee (Under Consideration)
Italy is one of several EU countries (alongside France, Netherlands, Belgium, and Romania) considering introducing a national customs handling fee on low-value e-commerce shipments as early as 2026. Details are not yet finalized. We will update this page when confirmed.
