The ¥50 Tax Waiver — Hidden Savings
When importing personal items into China, the 25% flat parcel tax applies. But if the calculated parcel tax is under ¥50 CNY, it is waived entirely. Item value ¥200 → tax = ¥50 → waived = FREE. Item value ¥180 → tax = ¥45 → waived = FREE. Item value ¥250 → tax = ¥63 → NOT waived, you pay ¥63. Effective tax-free limit: ~¥200 CNY (~$28 USD) per shipment. For small items like books, accessories, or gifts, this means zero tax.
US-China Tariff Situation (2025–2026)
As of 2025, the United States has imposed tariffs of up to 145% on Chinese imports into the US. In retaliation, China has imposed tariffs on certain US goods entering China. While personal-use imports via package forwarding are generally processed under the parcel tax system (not affected by retaliatory commercial tariffs), shipping times and customs scrutiny may be increased due to heightened trade tensions. Keep shipments clearly labeled as personal use, declare accurate values, and be prepared for potential customs delays.
Chinese Customs Scrutiny
Chinese customs may inspect or flag shipments based on: quantity (large quantities may be treated as commercial), brand/counterfeits (strict checks on branded luxury goods), cosmetics/food (may require additional inspection or CFDA approval), value declarations (customs may adjust declared values if significantly below market price), and prohibited items (VPN devices, certain publications, religious materials may be confiscated). Keep shipments clearly personal-use and declare accurate values.

Laptops, tablets, and certain electronic components imported for personal use may qualify for reduced or zero customs duty under China's tariff schedule. Standard 13% VAT still applies.
