Unlike countries like Australia (AUD 1,000) or South Korea ($200), India does not offer a meaningful tax-free threshold for personal imports. Virtually all imported goods are subject to BCD + SWS + IGST. Even low-value items shipped via courier or post attract IGST. Budget for approximately 30–40% additional costs on most consumer goods. However, the 2026 Budget reform halving BCD on personal goods to 10% significantly reduces the total tax burden.
2026 Union Budget Reform — BCD Halved for Personal Goods
The Indian government's 2026 Union Budget slashed Basic Customs Duty on personal-use imports from 20% to 10% — a 50% reduction. Combined with the ongoing simplification of tariff slabs (reduced from many rates to just 8 core slabs), importing personal goods from the US has become significantly more affordable. Gift Exemption (₹5,000)
