What is an MSDS/SDS form and how can I get one?

An SDS (formerly known as MSDS) details hazards, handling, and safety information for chemicals or hazardous materials. You typically request it from the manufacturer or supplier.

What is an MSDS / SDS?

  • MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet. SDS stands for Safety Data Sheet. Over time, the industry has shifted to using “SDS” under global hazard communication standards.
  • An SDS is a standardized document that provides detailed information about a material’s properties, hazards, handling, storage, transportation, first aid, and emergency measures.
  • It is especially important for shipments containing hazardous materials (chemicals, flammables, batteries, etc.), so that all parties (transporters, customs, emergency responders) know how to handle the goods safely.

When do you need an SDS / MSDS?

  • When shipping liquids, powders, or hazardous materials, carriers often require an SDS to accompany the shipment to prove compliance and detail safety and handling instructions.
  • If your package is designated as dangerous goods / hazardous (for example certain batteries, chemicals), regulators may ask for SDS documentation during export or import.

How to obtain an SDS / MSDS

  1. Request from the manufacturer or supplier
The primary source for an SDS is the product’s manufacturer or supplier. They are legally required (in many jurisdictions) to supply the SDS for their materials.
  2. Check manufacturer websites or product portals
Many manufacturers host SDS / MSDS files on their websites. Search by product name, chemical name, CAS number, or model number.
  3. Use SDS databases or regulatory portals
Several public SDS / MSDS databases allow you to search and download existing sheets.
  4. Hire a specialist / SDS authoring services
If your product involves custom chemicals or no SDS exists, you can engage a professional SDS service to prepare a compliant SDS, including translations where needed.
  5. Use request forms / SDS request portals
Some manufacturers have online SDS request tools where you enter your product and receive the SDS via email.
